About Our Director

Jicheng Gu

Mr. Gu is the Director of GU Institute of Earthquake Prediction. A Physicist/Seismologist. Born in Hunan province, China, Graduated from the Dept of Physics/Geophysics, Peking University in 1966, then worked at the Institute of Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and mainly studies physics of earthquake source and earthquake prediction methods. He established a physical model of the imminent precursory phenomena of earthquakes; firstly defined & proposed the seismicity function S to quantitative description of seismic activity; the first scholar who introduced the emerging

metal fracture mechanics in the 1960s to study earthquake fracture process; In 1980, he came to the United States as the first place in the National United Examinations in Academy of Sciences System (Seismology) for going Abroad, and worked in the Div. of Engineering at Brown Univ., the Div. of Applied Sciences at Harvard Univ., and the Dept of Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT. During Brown, Harvard and MIT, he studied the nonlinear stability , chaos, and bifurcation of friction systems, and proposed and established the frictional constitutive law with cooperating scientists, and the frictional constitutive law of non-uniform frictional sliding. His research involves many fields of physics, Including laser fiber communication, nano-lubrication technology. In recent years He discovered and proved the existence of seismic precursory waves physically and obtained the uniform, closed and analytical solutions mathematically. His decades of studies and practice make

him firmly believe that earthquakes are predictable, and some of successful earthquake predictions have been made based on his theories.
